We're just about a week away from the Orange iPhone launch, and if you folks across the pond were wondering what the deal was going to cost you, you now have your answer thanks to a dizzying but thoroughly helpful series of tables that lay out the costs of the phones, plans, and the various accoutrement to be included. Those willing to sign up for 24 months can get an 8GB iPhone 3G for free for a minimum of £29.36 ($48) per month, but step up to the £122.34 ($200) monthly plan with unlimited everything and you'll get a 32GB 3GS gratis. Meanwhile, on a pay as you go plan that same 8GB 3G will cost you £343 ($561), while the 32GB 3GS is a rather more painful £539 ($881 -- haven't you figured out the conversion rate yet?). You know what that means: contract ahoy.
Orange UK's iPhone contract & pay as you go pricing plans detailed originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 02 Nov 2009 08:29:00 EST. It's been a long, long time since Emblaze Mobile and ACCESS engaged in holy cellphone matrimony, and the fruit of that relationship is finally coming to bear. It's called ELSE INTUITION, a Linux-based mobile platform that comes with such a hyperbolic press release that we can't help but think every other mobile manufacturer should just pack up and go home. It's said to match the functionality of "top ranked MP3 players, best-in-class GPS devices, and more, while maintaining an exceptional ease and simplicity of use." Golly. At this point we only have a few images to go by, and though they do look plenty nice, we wouldn't consider our minds blown just yet -- particularly those of us with a left-handed bias. Remember, ACCESS is the company that turned Palm OS into Garnet OS and then failed to win anyone over with its Access Linux Platform, so what could go wrong here? What's it going to be, readers: WebOS or ELSE?

Update: Another right-handed pic (ironically taken on an iPhone) added after the break.

[Via AV Watch]
Continue reading ACCESS and Emblaze Mobile unveil ELSE INTUITION, the Linux-based mobile OS of your dreams

ACCESS and Emblaze Mobile unveil ELSE INTUITION, the Linux-based mobile OS of your dreams originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 23 Oct 2009 07:14:00 EST. Now look, we're not calling you stupid or anything -- but you don't really know what to do with that phone... do you? Why don't you make things easier on everyone and just pick up this handy tome, written by our in-house Dostoyevsky, Engadget Mobile lead Chris Ziegler. We don't want to ruin anything for you here, but by the time you're done with this sweet piece, you'll be so handy with a Pre, Palm will call you for tech support. Is that overselling it? Nah.
Buy this book: Chris Ziegler's 'Palm Pre for Dummies'! originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 13 Oct 2009 19:03:00 EST. We knew it was coming, and here it is -- the glorious first showing of the Palm Pre in its GSM garb. From today, our Deutsch comrades can grab a Pre and do whatever they want to do to it, courtesy of O2, its exclusive German supplier. The device will set you back €481 without contract, with the O2 My Handy option letting you finance it via 24 monthly payments of €20. Check out the online store link below for full details and available calling plans. Pre Thinking have also noted the arrival of two new free apps in the Pre catalog -- ran and VZ-Netzwerke, both in German -- and the likely prospect of even more coming along as the Pre starts its long-awaited rollout across Europe over the next few days.
Think again! It's actually a trade group created to fight for your interests -- or at least those interests of your duly elected wireless providers -- and apparently top among those lists of interests is plug standardization. Yes, we're not the only ones sick of still having a sprawling mess of a gadget charging station, so CTIA is saying that micro-USB will be the power standard for all handsets and mobile devices. Likewise, the 3.5mm audio plug will be the standard for audio output on those same gadgets. It's shocking, we know, if only because we thought the entire gadget universe was already on board, with everyone and their mommas signing up for micro-USB and even HTC finally making room for a 3.5mm hole in the bottom of their handsets. These standards are set to go into effect in January of 2012, meaning we should get a good 11 months or so of dongle-free gadget harmony before the apocalypse.
CTIA jumps on the micro-USB bandwagon originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 12 Oct 2009 07:04:00 EST. We've seen blurry pics and reports from inventory systems, and now the official confirmation. This morning's joint press conference between Verizon and Google has resulted in a holy matrimony of sorts; a melding of the minds; a promise of new hardware to come. Yes, it's just a promise for now as neither company took the chance to confirm the Sholes or any of the other devices that have been popping up. But, Verizon did at least say that the agreement "will come to fruition within the next few weeks as Verizon Wireless introduces Android-based handsets." So, it won't be long now.
Google and Verizon announce partnership, love and new Android handsets to result originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 06 Oct 2009 08:22:00 EST. A tiny little beta leak earlier this month let BlackBerry-toting Mac fans knew that something good was coming in the near future, and now we know it's very near indeed (though a bit later than expected). On October 2 RIM will release BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac, specifically at 1:00pm EST. That means instead of wrapping up your busy work-week being productive you can instead spend the afternoon fighting long download queues and playing around getting this app configured -- for purely work-related purposes of course, like syncing with iCal, Address Book, and automatically backing up contacts. Just don't tell your boss you'll also be able to sync your iTunes collection to your handset, including album art, something that should make Pre-owning Bob down the hall a little jealous. Again, the fun starts Friday afternoon at 1:00 EST. Clear your calendars accordingly.

Read - RIM Launches BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac Users
Read - Download here come Friday
BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac releasing October 2 originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 30 Sep 2009 07:24:00 EST. We might still have debates over whether the SCH-W880 represents a cameraphone or our newly minted category of phonecamera, but there's no doubt about this: the Samsung AMOLED 12M is now official and coming to (at least) Korea in October. The specs align closely to yesterday's info, with a 3x optical zoom, 720p video recording, dedicated camera controls, and a 800 x 480 3.3-inch AMOLED display grabbing the headlines. Touch AF makes use of the touchscreen to let you choose focus areas, while image stabilization and Smart Auto modes fill out the software side of the camera. That leaves us with scant little info on the actual phone, but you could probably fill those specs in yourself by now, right? Full PR after the break.

[Via Samsung Hub]

Continue reading Samsung's 12 megapixel SCH-W880 made official

Samsung's 12 megapixel SCH-W880 made official originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 29 Sep 2009 04:36:00 EST. Well well, turns out rumors sometimes do come true. The widely speculated end to O2's exclusivity of the iPhone is now upon us and Orange is the first competitor to throw its hat into the ring. The company has not yet released tariff pricing, but there's a tantalizingly small release window, as availability is promised "later this year." At least there's finally some competition when it comes to the iPhone in the UK, and we can also probably look forward to T-Mobile joining in on the fun. Let the price war begin!

[Via iPhone Bang; Thanks, Gears]
iPhone 3G and 3GS to be offered by Orange UK -- official originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 28 Sep 2009 04:07:00 EST. It might be about four months late, but the UK is finally getting its slice of the tasty new Palm pie. There'll be no shortage of outlets to buy this from, with the Carphone Warehouse, Phones4U and O2's online shop all stocked up, but the carrier options are limited to just one. You'll find tables of UK and Ireland pricing after the break, and you'll be happy to know that the Pre can be had for free on two-year contracts charging £34.26 per month, which come with "unlimited" mobile data and free access to the BT OpenZone WiFi service.

[Thanks, Andrew]

Update: Good news for our Teutonic brethren, as O2 Germany has also let slip news of the Pre hitting Deutschland on October 13, with the device priced at €481 without contract or cheaper with.
Continue reading Palm Pre coming to the UK and Ireland October 16, Germany October 13, all O2 exclusives

Palm Pre coming to the UK and Ireland October 16, Germany October 13, all O2 exclusives originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 24 Sep 2009 03:51:00 EST. Oh, global economic crisis, when will you stop claiming our favorite companies? Oh, wait, it's just i-mate folding this time? So, the company that already laid off its US staff is totally going away? We can live with that. It seems i-mate's remaining employees in Dubai Internet City were told yesterday that they had to take an unpaid two-month leave. That, apparently, was a typo, as the people were actually supposed to take an indefinite unpaid leave. Oops. The company has already been delisted from stock markets around the world, and this abrupt closing has left a number of retailers hanging as orders for the 810F are apparently still pending. The Engadget Show gets underway this coming Sunday, September 13th, in New York City, and we're super excited to announce that the first person we'll be sitting down with for a one-on-one conversation is Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein! Between the recent launch of the Pixi, the introduction Pre and webOS, and all the other hubbub surrounding the company, we think it will be quite an interesting chat.

The show -- which will be a mix of one-on-one interviews, roundtable discussions, short video segments, and live music -- will take place at the Tishman Auditorium at Parsons The New School for Design. The Show will be filmed live once a month -- but if you can't make it, don't worry. We'll be bringing the full video back home to Engadget (and as a free download in the iTunes Store, Zune Marketplace, etc.) for your viewing pleasure. The full show should be online just a few days after we tape!

The beautiful venue (which you can see in a photo after the break) is located at 66 W. 12th Street between 5th and 6th Aves. Seating is limited and tickets will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis -- which means if you want to join us in the audience for the show, you'll have to arrive early and be prepared for a little wait.

Here are the facts you need to know about the show:

The company has long-since gotten everything working smoothly and so is now so confident about its stability that it's letting other developers in on the party. Coders proficient in HTML, CSS, and Javascript can apply for access to the beta SDK, invitations for which are being doled out right now. The navigation-focused kit includes a number of UI widgets and controls that will help any 'ol app sport the clean, understated Nokia look, as well as things like the Ovi Navigation Player API, which makes nav-related apps much easier to get up and running. Nokia's not giving any indication of just how long the line at the door is or what criteria it's using to judge who gets past the red velvet rope into this shin-dig, but we'd recommend at least a shave and a clean shirt before applying. Vids excitedly discussing this wondrous new world are embedded below.

[Via Nokia Conversations]
Continue reading Nokia's Ovi Software Development Kit released to invited and excited Javascripters

Nokia's Ovi Software Development Kit released to invited and excited Javascripters originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 04 Sep 2009 08:16:00 EST. LG's latest Black Label device, tastefully titled the Chocolate Touch, caused quite a few gasps and swoons around the Engadget mansion when it was first spotted, and subsequent photo shoots have not diminished our admiration. The gorgeous 4-inch, 21:9 display promises a whole new way to experience web browsing and video playback on a mobile phone, and we've been salivating for an opportunity to try it out. Oh, look, it's another place to buy bite-sized mobile apps, this one courtesy of Samsung. The company isn't exactly new to the whole application store thing, launching a little outlet for Nokia users earlier this year, but piggy-backing on someone else's platform and boldly blazing a trail of iFart knockoffs on your own hardware are two very different things. The imaginatively named Samsung Application Store launches on September 14 for British, French, and Italian Omnia and I8910 HD handsets, later coming to the Omnia II and OmniaLITE as well as users in various other nations. Samsung is pledging "over 300" apps to start, while partners like Electronic Arts, Capcom, Gameloft, and TAITO have signed on for the fun. Omnia BUST-A-MOVE, anyone?

[Via NewsWire]
Samsung Application Store announced, the mobile mall gets a little more crowded originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 31 Aug 2009 07:23:00 EST. Oh, how we love PR people and their eternal clarifications on things. Apparently, the Dell Mini 3i's apperance at a China Mobile event on Monday was merely a proof of concept, and -- wait for it -- "it wasn't officially, formally introduced so much as it was waved around." Thank you, Dell, for our quote of the week. Unwilling to yet commit to the handset and specs on display, Dell is saying that it was there to support China Mobile in its role as a development partner rather than to promote any retail products. We wouldn't read too much into this supposed refutation -- if the phone were indeed a concept, that'd have been made clear at the show (and it wasn't based on the original report), and what we're experiencing now feels very much like post-event spin.
Have Sprint service? Like data? Heck, who doesn't like data? (Hint: you wouldn't be reading this right now without it.) Well mosey on over, partner, and listen in -- because we've got a heck of a deal for you. We've hooked up with Sierra Wireless to offer you the opportunity to win a free 598U USB modem on Sprint, complete with EV-DO Rev. A speeds and a built-in microSD slot. If you're feeling lucky (or... you know, you could just really use a modem), have a glance at the rules and get down to business!
What could be the only thing better than an S60 3.2 dual slider with an OLED display and a 5 megapixel camera? A free S60 3.2 dual slider with an OLED display and a 5 megapixel camera, that's what! Engadget has hooked up with eXpansys USA to give away a Nokia N85 to one lucky reader -- so head on over to Engadget for the full details. If this last week's wide assortment of pre-show announcements and leaks was any indication, this is going to be one helluva MWC. Naturally, we're here, on the ground, scarfing down tapas and working ourselves into a mild frenzy. The excitement is due to begin at 5PM local time (11AM EST) with some pre-show events, and should carry well into the night as phones are unveiled, embargoes lift, and we get our hands on the latest and greatest. The show proper begins tomorrow, so rouse yourself a few hours early, pour a pot of coffee into your face and get ready for phones, phones and more phones!

Nuestro equipo de Engadget en español también está aquí, y realizará las coberturas en directo y en español!
GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona: we're here! originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Sun, 15 Feb 2009 08:01:00 EST. Three years ago, mobile phones were but a twinkle in a handful of Motorola and Bell Labs engineers' eyes. The United States was steeped in civil war, Napoleon Bonaparte was gallivanting through Europe, and Julius Caesar had just been brutally betrayed by his most trusted comrades. Yes, it was a crazy time to be alive -- so crazy, in fact, that our dear parents at Engadget saw fit to spin off the choicest, juiciest cuts of phone news into a site to call their own. That site, of course, was Engadget Mobile -- and to this very day, our goal and mission is as clear and unwavering as it ever has been: keep you in the know.

Here's the thing, though: we know that we'd be nothing without you, our dear readers. You build us up, tear us down, keep us in check, and tip us with some seriously good stuff. That kind of dedication shouldn't go unappreciated, you know? So, on that note, we want to give out a really cool phone -- read on!

Continue reading Jumpin' Jehosephat, we're three!

Jumpin' Jehosephat, we're three! originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 13 Feb 2009 12:00:00 EST. Some (us included) would argue that a podcast isn't much of a podcast without feeds, but good news: we have 'em now. So add our weekly bout of relentless yammering to the audio app of your choice, sit back, relax, and never worry about having to keep your eyes peeled for the Podcast post from the edge of your seat again! Yay!

Right now we're waiting on iTunes approval -- it'll definitely be up by the time we post next week's show -- but meanwhile, have a crack at our other delicious flavors:

[iTunes] Subscribe to the Podcast directly in iTunes
[RSS MP3] Add the Engadget Mobile Podcast feed (in MP3) to your RSS aggregator and have the show delivered automatically
[RSS AAC] Add the Engadget Mobile Podcast feed (in enhanced AAC) to your RSS aggregator
[Zune] Subscribe to the Podcast directly in the Zune Marketplace
The Engadget Mobile Podcast adds feeds! originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 21 Jan 2009 11:05:00 EST. Statistically speaking, odds are you didn't get a new phone as a gift today. If you lie somewhere in that silent majority, we've got an awesome bit of news: we can totally remedy that for you. Well, not all of you, but at least one of you -- with a shiny Nokia N81 equipped all the N-Gage gaming support you can handle!

So how does this work, exactly? Easy:

Leave a comment below. We'll be picking a winner through a scientific, complicated, completely classified process that ultimately results in a random selection.

You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you'll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.)

If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you'll be fine.

Contest is open to anyone in the 50 States, 18 or older! Sorry, we don't make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers or US contest laws if you have to be mad.

Winners will be chosen randomly.

Entries can be submitted until 11:59PM Eastern Standard Time on December 26, 2008. After that we're all done. Good luck!

So HTC is running this wild contest where they're giving away a Fuze a day for 120 frickin' days -- that's a lot of days and a lot of Fuzes -- and as if that wasn't enough, there'll also be a grand prize winner getting $25,000 in cold, hard cash and four first place winners nabbing $15,000 American Express gift cards. Oh, and both the grand prize and first place prizes include a pair of Fuzes to boot!

So hey, we may not have 120 of the things to give away, but HTC was gracious enough to hook us up with a single Fuze to pass on to one of our lovely readers. Would you like it? Here's how it works:
After weeks of hand-wringing, we've finally settled on a winner of our contest for LG's uber-limited $1,500 Iron Man edition Shine! We asked you to send in pictures of the busted-up pieces of garbage you call "phones," and holy cow, did we get some doozies.

Without further adieu, our winner, Mark H., comes to us from Novato, California. Here's his story:

"I need a new phone as you can see. I have had this Nokia phone since 2001. I'm in the military service and my friends make fun of my old phone and now they're really on me since my phone was run over by a car and I use electrical tape to keep the faceplate together. I don't get paid enough by the service to buy a nice new phone."

Congratulations, Mark! Even if this relic were in perfect condition, it'd still be time for an upgrade. Let's try to keep this one a little less scuffed, because that solid gold battery cover definitely does not live up to the "Iron Man" name. We'd love to know if you think you do, because we're looking to actually pay people to do this stuff. Professional writing experience isn't necessary (though it doesn't hurt), but what we really care about is that you can write skillfully about gadgets with wit, concision, and authority. And being obsessed with Engadget is good, too. Reports tell us that the device is a roughly 3-inch by 5-inch touchscreen phone with a slider keyboard. If ever there were an LG Shine to live up to its lofty name, this would definitely be it. We'd like to introduce you to the Iron Man phone -- presented here by our boy Robert Downey, Jr. -- based on the Shine slider as sold by AT&T. Unlike the garden-variety Shine, the Iron Man edition trades up to a deep red case with gold plated highlights and a solid 18K gold battery cover to commemorate the launch of the film in style. That's plenty enough element 79 to give this thing some serious heft. We're not bragging, though -- we want you to have it.

The phone is valued at a princely $1,500; twenty are being given away by LG directly -- we've got the twenty first. How do you pry it out of our hands? Easy: we want to see just how nasty, disgusting, and close to complete breakdown your current face candy is. Send us a pic and tell us a little bit about your poor, dilapidated phone and the long journey it's taken to its current state of disrepair. We'll pick the saddest entry and let you retire that terrible thing for something just a little flashier.

One word of advice though: don't bother breaking your phone or taking a photo of your dad's Dynatac or something, that's not what we're looking for.

Check out the gallery to see shots of the very Iron Man phone that could be yours, and don't forget to enter. Good luck!

The rules (yeah, there are always rules)

Send us your original photo. If we find your picture elsewhere on the internet, you will so be disqualified. Don't test us here, we've seen every picture of every phone. Ever.

Email submissions to contests [at] engadget [dawt] com with the subject "I am Iron Man!" And for the love of our inbox, please keep your images 1MB or under, ok?

You may only enter this contest once. If you enter this contest more than once you'll be automatically disqualified, etc.

Contest is open to anyone in the 50 States, 18 or older! Sorry, we don't make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers and contest laws if you have to be mad.

Entries must be in by 11:59PM EDT, Sunday, May 18th. After that, give us some time to sort through the entries and pick out the best (or worst, depending on how you look at it).

"In the next few months," Curtis promised, "operators will carry a lot of new products from us." While Nokia controls 40% of the worldwide handset market, they only have a 10% share in the United States. It seems they're not happy with that and want a bigger piece of the American pie. Our best friends at T-Mobile are getting set to roll out 3G in New York soon -- real soon, as was previously expected. New York will launch on May 1, to be exact, according to TmoNews.com. That's, like, tomorrow. The leaked document promises T-Mobile customers the "great call quality they've come to expect...and more network availability". The rest of the network will be rolled out in 2008 to 20 markets, including Los Angeles, Detroit, San Diego, Austin, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Miami, and several more. As TmoNews.com points out, New Jersey and Long Island are mysteriously off the list. View all the launch cities after the break.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Continue reading T-Mobile rolling out 3G tomorrow in New York, sorry New Jersey

T-Mobile rolling out 3G tomorrow in New York, sorry New Jersey originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 30 Apr 2008 09:50:00 EST. It's been well over a year since our last big redesign, which in gadget time means our last design was unveiled circa original Walkman. So we're freshening up the whole joint -- all seven sites -- with a brand new design. Oh, and we're also adding an eighth site to the Engadget network: Switched!

Our latest addition, Switched will be dishing out features for those with a more casual interest in tech, as well as highlighting fresh, hand-picked tech news from our network of sister sites. So expect to see hot stories from Engadget classic, Mobile, HD, TUAW, and Download Squad running over there, as well as news from other geeky Weblogs, Inc. sites like Joystiq, Xbox 360 Fanboy, and Wii Fanboy.

As for Engadget's new design, we went through and really cleaned up the joint, yanking out old modules and ads wherever possible. You might spot our new and improved photo gallery browsing and updated looks on things like comments and polls, but it's hardest to miss the new rotating carousel over on the right. Keep an eye on that thing, it's where we'll be plugging in our biggest stories and must-see features.

Of course, launching eight sites at the same time is bound to cause a few problems, so please tap that first adopter attitude and bear with us as we squish bugs and tweak styles. And definitely hit us up in comments to let us know what you think (or if you see anything wonky)!

P.S. -Big ups to the gang that worked tirelessly to make this happen: Matt, Mark, Erik, Gavin, Celly, Alex, Christoph, Charlie, Marty, and the rest of the crew!
Engadget gets a new look and adds Switched to the family! originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 10 Apr 2008 02:11:00 EST. After yesterday's very real and not-at-all-fake story about Deutsche Telekom demanding Engadget discontinue using the color magenta, and today being what it is, we're putting up some new wallpaper on all the Engadget sites and ever so slightly tweaking Engadget Mobile's logo. We hope you approve!

P.S. -In a related side note, our old pals at Phone Scoop pinged us earlier this morning to let us know they've gone magenta for the day in an act of solidarity. We here at Engadget Mobile tend to spend <strike>a lot of</strike> way too much time poring over the latest FCC filings, and it seems that we may have finally pushed 'em over the deep end. The FCC's site is down at the moment, so we're afraid we won't be able to bring you your regularly-scheduled document extravaganza this evening; stay tuned, though, because we'll be back in action just as soon as the feds are!
FCC Fridays on (very) temporary hiatus originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 07 Mar 2008 22:58:00 EST. It looks like Android will have more than just its openness and pretty face to show to the world soon. According to a report from Reuters, LG has officially set a time-table for bringing a Google-powered handset to market (and obviously not the phone above). "We will bring it out late in 2008 or early 2009," said Chang Ma, the company's vice president for marketing strategy. The plan sounds shockingly close to competitor Samsung's scheme for a rollout of the Linux phone in early 2009. Clearly, companies are doing more than just putting pen to paper on the platform -- let's just hope those minor kinks get straightened out before the new year.

[Via Phone Scoop]
LG aims for Android handsets by 2009 originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 13 Feb 2008 12:33:00 EST. Time flies when you're having fun, doesn't it? Seems like just yesterday we were all fake-typing away on our paper Qs (oh, come on, don't act like you didn't make one, too) and dreaming of a 3G future. Two years later, we're already talking about 4G trials, the original Motorola Q feels like a fading memory while its maker teeters on the brink of a similar fate, and thanks to a wireless industry that never fails to keep us on our toes, we're as obsessed and excited about cellphones as we ever have been before. Yeah, we're giving ourselves a little pat on the back for making it through our teething years, but let's be honest: Engadget Mobile owes the entirety of its success to its brilliant competition for keeping us sharp, its ever-supportive parents, and more than anything, its awesome readership (that's you, people!). Here's to another two years of killer mobile coverage, yeah?
Great googly moogly, we're two! originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 13 Feb 2008 08:00:00 EST.
